Area or perimeter of a square/rectangle

CONCEPTS

Rectangles

• Perimeter = 2 * l + 2 * w (l = length, w = width)

• Area = l * w (l = Length, w = width)

Squares

• Perimeter = 2 * l + 2 * l

• Area = l * l

PRACTICE PROBLEMS

Question 1 Abe plans to use 28 feet of fence to enclose a region in his yard. What’s the larges rectangular region Abe can enclose?

-- Answer -- 49

Let L be the length of the region.

Width = (28 - 2L) / 2

S = (14 - L) * L = -L² + 14 L = (L - 7) ² + 49

When L = 7, S(max) = 49
