Subtract shapes

CONCEPTS

Types of Shapes

• The mixed shapes can be composed of 2 circles, 2 rectangles, a rectangle + a square, a rectangle + a triangle, or any other combination.

Problem Types

1) subtract the areas / volumes

2) subtract the perimeters

PRACTICE PROBLEMS

Question 1 What is the length of the pool if the width is 28 in the figure below if the pools if the sides of the patio are equal on opposite sides?

What is the area of the patio?

What is the perimeter of the pool?

(see figure below)

-- Answer -- 140

60 / 40 = x / 28, x = 42

A = 60 * 40 - 28 * 42 = 1224

P = 28 * 2 + 42 * 2 = 140

Question 2 In the figure below, all of the small squares are equal in area, and the area of the rectangle ABCD is 1 square unit. Which best describes the area of the shaded region: A) 1/9 * 1/7, B) 1/9 * 6/7, C) 1/9 * 8/9, D) 8/9 * 1/7, E) 8/9 * 6/7?

-- Answer -- 52

Area of each individual square = 2 * 2 = 4

Area of the entire unit has 8 x 6 squares => 8 * 6 = 48 * 4 = 192

Area of the shaded part of the unit has 7 x 5 squares => 7 * 5 = 35 * 4 = 140

Area of the non-shaded part of the unit = 192 – 140 = 52

-- Answer -- 8 / 9 * 6 / 7

Question 3 There are 2 small circles inside a larger circle. The smaller circle has a radius of 2 and the larger circle has a radius of 10. What is the area inside the large circle, not including the area of the 2 small circles?

-- Answer -- 96π

Larger circle area = π * r² = π * 10² = 100π

Smaller circle area = π * r² = π * 2² = 4π

Shaded area between larger and smaller circle = 100π - 4π = 96π
