Slope equation
CONCEPTS
Slope Equation
• m = rise / run = (y₂ – y₁) / (x₂ – x₁) (m = slope, points are (x₁, y₁) & (x₂, y₂))
PRACTICE PROBLEMS
Question 1 What is the slope created by the line between the 2 points (3, 2) & (1, 5)?
-- Answer -- 3/2
m = (5 - 2) / (1 - 3) = 3 / -2 = -3/2
Question 2 What is the slope of the line by connecting points B and D (see figure below)?

-- Answer -- 1/2
Slope = (14 - 12) / (7 - 3) = 2/4 = ½
Question 3 In the figure below, is the slope positive or negative?

-- Answer -- negative
The slope is negative because the angle of the line is pointing downwards (the numerator in the slope equation will be negative)
