Leg lengths of a triangle

CONCEPTS

Triangles

• Perimeter = length of leg 1 + length of leg 2 + length of leg 3

• Area = 1/2 b * h (b = base, h = height)

PRACTICE PROBLEMS

Question 1 The ratio of 3 sides of a triangle are 3:2:4 and the perimeter is 18. What is the length of each side?

-- Answer -- 2

3x + 2x + 4x = 18, x = 2

Question 2 If the length of 1 leg of a triangle is 3 in longer than the 1st leg, another is 5 in longer than the 1st leg and the perimeter is 17, what is the length of 1 leg?

-- Answer -- 3

x => 1st leg, x + 3 => 2nd leg, x + 5 => 3rd leg

x + x + 3 + x + 5 = 17, x = 3
