Leg lengths of a square/rectangle

CONCEPTS

Rectangles

• Perimeter = 2 * l + 2 * w (l = length, w = width)

• Area = l * w (l = Length, w = width)

Squares

• Perimeter = 2 * l + 2 * l

• Area = l * l

PRACTICE PROBLEMS

Question 1 Given a rectangle with an area of 10 and a width of 5, what is the length of a leg?

-- Answer -- 2

A = l * w, 10 = 5l, l = 2

Question 2 The area of a rectangle is 300 and the width is 3x it's length. What are the width & length?

-- Answer -- l = 10, w = 30

Area = 300, w = 5l, l = l

w * l = 3l² = 300

l² = 100 => l = 10

w = 3l = 30
