Distance equation
CONCEPTS
Distance Equation
• Distance = √((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²) (points are (x₁, y₁) & (x₂, y₂))
Tips
• Pythagorean theorem is the same as distance formula…a² + b² = c²
PRACTICE PROBLEMS
Question 1 An emergency helicopter is located 2 miles north and 4 miles east of the city center. There is an emergency 22 miles south and 6 miles west of the city center. What is the distance between these 2 points?
-- Answer -- 26
The helicopter is 2 + 22 = 24 miles north and 4 + 6 = 10 miles east of the emergency.
24² + 10² = x² => x = 26
