Convert Number to Scientific Notation

CONCEPTS

Notation of Scientific Notation (2 parts)

• a x 10ᵉˣᵖᵒⁿᵉⁿᵗ

• Digit (a): the decimal point is placed after the 1st digit => 3.2, 4.83

• Exponent: 10 to a power of a number => x 10³


EXAMPLES

• 39.2 x 10² is NOT in scientific notation format

PRACTICE PROBLEMS

Question 1 Convert 6300 to scientific notation


-- Answer -- 6.3 x 10³

The decimal is moved 3 times from 6300. To 6.300



Question 2 Convert 0.0000457 to scientific notation


-- Answer -- 4.57 x 10⁵

The decimal is moved 5 times from 0.0000457 to 4.57



Question 3 Convert 3.2 x 10² to a number


-- Answer -- 320

The exponent = 2 so move the decimal 2 places to the left. 3.2 moves to 320.
