Compare mean, median, mode, range

CONCEPTS

Mode

• The most frequently occurring number(s) in a data set

Range

• Max value – Min value

Tips

• Write out the equations for mean and range, and write out the sequence for mean and mode. The answer will be obvious after the information is there to see

PRACTICE PROBLEMS

Question 1 The list of numbers 41, 35, 30, x, y, 15 has a median of 25 & a mode of 15. To the nearest whole number, what's the mean?

-- Answer -- 26

The list of numbers is from highest to lowest. The median is 25, therefore (30+x)/2 = 25, x=20.

The mode is 15, therefore y=15.

The mean is (41+35+30+20+15+15)/6 = 26

Question 2 There are 11 positive numbers. The mean & median is 7. What is the max value if each number is different?

-- Answer -- 13

Since all numbers are positive and the median is 7, there must be 5 numbers between 1 to 6; the smallest number can be 1. Therefore, the largest number can be 13 if the mean is 7.

Question 3 The difference between 2 numbers is 15. If n is the larger number, which expression represents the average of the 2 numbers?

-- Answer -- 7.5

To calculate the mean of n numbers, take the sum and divide it by n. (n + n – 15) / 2 = n – 7.5
